Daniel-José Cyan

I've been taking photos seriously as of 2014 but started freelancing in 2016.
I first started with capturing photos of the things that most interested me- often the things that were most aesthetically appealing, and living in new york city, that was easy. shortly after that, i worked my way up to asking people if they could model for me, and i did portraiture for years.
I never thought photography would be one of the mediums I used to express my life story and identity but this is where my photography has moved toward. My personal projects have explored gender identity, recovery, and mental health--but this is only the beginning.
I graduated with a bachelor of arts in film from Hunter College in 2020 where i learned how to use a camera to better tell the stories I want to tell. I'm primarily a filmmaker and poet, but I believe in the power of still images and take photography as seriously as I take my growing career in film.
I think the beauty in art is that the artist has the freedom and capabilities to share something about themselves or others through various mediums. I intend to use that to its full potential.
